The first woman and first American named as Director of Musical Studies at the Vienna State Opera, Kathleen Kelly joins M4Arts for one of our most special and exclusive webinars yet. In this three part series, participants will learn how to enter a piece from the language itself. This course is geared towards professional and pre-professional vocalists, but all levels are welcome and encouraged.

Session one: we jump into the music of words. We tend to attach words to melodies, starting back in our voice-building days when we learned tuned on vowels and added text later. In this session, we explore turning that process upside down, and beginning with the inherent rhythm, pitch, and sound quality of the words that inspired composers to attach music to them.

Session two: we’ll talk about how our American English is physically and expressively hard-wired, and the ways in which that hampers or helps us when we dig into other languages. Learn about our biggest blind spots, from pronunciation to emotional expression.
